Services

Therapy

Treatment can take on many forms, one of which is individual therapy. I provide individual therapy services to children, adolescents, and adults.  Individual therapy includes education, guidance, support, direction, and instruction in order to overcome presenting difficulties. I have a strengths-based philosophy, and recognize the importance that one's environment (e.g. family, friends, work, school) has on him or her. I emphasize building new skills for handling life’s difficulties, including developing new behaviors and changing maladaptive thought patterns. Depending on the age of the client, play therapy might be incorporated.

Family therapy is offered as a stand-alone treatment or in conjunction with individual therapy. Family therapy addresses the interpersonal or relationship issues within the family system and often focuses on developing effective problem-solving and communication skills.

When there are difficulties within one's romantic relationship, couples counseling can improve the level of functioning among partners. I emphasize the development of positive communication and problem-solving skills to try to minimize negative interactions and to promote joint experiences that are pleasurable and rewarding. Please note that I only work with couples that are not experiencing difficulties due to substance use/abuse.

Parent coaching is another treatment approach that is offered. Parent coaching involves helping parents learn how to use positive discipline skills and to become more effective in setting limits. Parent coaching is ideal for families who have young children with disruptive behaviors such as defiance, arguing, task refusal, aggression, overactivity, and impulsivity as well as for families that are newly blended through marriage, adoption, or foster care. Coaching sessions can be provided at the office or within the family's home.

Group therapy services are offered on a revolving basis. The type of groups offered will differ depending on clients’ needs and demand. Group therapy is unique in its ability to provide clients with real life opportunities to try new behaviors and to receive instant, constructive feedback from peers. Be sure to check regularly to see when groups are scheduled.

Psychological Assessment

I provide psychological assessment services for children, adolescents, and adults. Assessment is an investigative process aimed to gain a better understanding of the client’s difficulties and to provide a framework for effective intervention. The assessment process includes interviews with the client (and parents), administration of psychological tests, report writing, and feedback. Assessment services provided include:

·    Cognitive/Intellectual development (e.g., IQ testing)

·    Developmental (e.g. cognitive functioning and adaptive behavior)

·    Psychoeducational (e.g., academic concerns, including learning disabilities and ADHD)

·    Personality (e.g., social-emotional and behavioral development)

I also provide pre-operative evaluations for bariatric sugery candidates. These evaluations are typically required by the surgeon and/or insurance company in order to make sure that you are well-informed and emotionally prepared for the significant changes that you will experience after surgery.

Consultation

Consultation with important persons in the client's life, including extended family, school/teachers or any other supports, can be an important part of an intervention plan.  Consultation is typically brief and solution focused.

Training

I am also available to provide training or continuing education for parents, schools, agencies, mental health and medical professionals etc. Please contact me so that we may discuss your specific training needs. Some of the past trainings that I have offered include “Handling Homework Hassles,”  “Positive Parenting Techniques,” and “Adolescent Development: An Overview of ‘Tweens to Teens.”
